AWAKENING
In Awakening, Jose Bacarreza invites viewers to cross the threshold between the visible and the imagined.
His paintings unfold as dreams suspended between ruin and rebirth — where an abandoned car becomes a garden, a sleeping figure guards celestial eggs, and nature itself awakens as consciousness.
Blending myth, memory and the Australian landscape, Bacarreza paints not what is seen, but what is remembered and felt — the moment when light, matter, and spirit meet.

All artwork exhibited is available to purchase for the duration of the exhibition.

The Artists in Residency (AIR) program is made possible thanks to funding from the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport.
The AIR program supports regional arts venues by helping them reach more people and engage their communities. It creates opportunities for people in regional areas to enjoy and participate in arts and culture, contributing to the vibrancy and liveability of these communities.
The Goldfields Arts Centre has been honoured to host a variety of artists through this program, engaging both local and visiting creatives, and bringing meaningful benefits to the community through their work.

Our first artist in residence along with this program was Jose Bacarreza. His residency was incredibly productive—not only in creating new artwork but also in how he connected with the local community. Jose’s paintings from this residency reflect the landscape, stories and unique magic of this land. They capture a blend of beauty, solitude, melancholy and the excitement of imagining new worlds. His work reveals a mysterious space—part human, part magical, part ethereal. No need for lengthy explanations—just look at the paintings. They speak for themselves.
